There really isn't an easy sure fired way to tell what COM port your
modem uses in DOS. If you have a DOS communications program you might
fire that up and try each port in succession. For each port try
sending the command "AT" (no quotes). If you get back an OK then you
have found the port.
Regarding your difficulties getting PPP to work with Linux: Perhaps if
you can find the logs that the pppd program is generating, usually in
/var/log/ppp, /var/log/daemon, or /var/log/messages, that would
help. You could send a copy of those logs and we could help you
analyse them.
