I checked that big list and FWIW, I was incorrect in the above statement.
SOME of the Sportsters are winmodems.  Some are real modems.  There are 56k
versions of each.  From your description of the problem, I'd say you
probably have a winmodem.  But I think they're all pnp, so if it's a real
modem, you'll need to run isapnp and configure it before you can use it.
