Hi John.
Here's the scoop, as I remember it anyway. After the install (I
originally chose the "Home Machine" package group) crashed because I
couldn't remember how to refer to the cd on the "block device" question, I
simply typed "dselect" and started answering questions. Since I don't know
what needs what and what the packages were that I originally selected, I
just said give it all to me. I have 1.6 GB to fool with so I figured I'd
just wing it once to see if I could make anything work. I got some of the
conflicts resolved (at least I think I did) but one recurrent message
wouldn't clear. It was something like netsf or something close needed to
be version 3 or greater. I tried to remove both and it didn't help. It
was simply stuck at that point. I did what I thought would force it to
install anyway, but it was only working on the install a second or two and
that told me it was successful. It might have been, but it can't find
anything I'd expect to be there. I'm not home so I can't walk through it
(and wouldn't be able to communicate with you if I was walking through it
anyway) so until I can try it again and take notes, that the best I can do.
Would it be worth trying to download the new distr. from the web? I
never have before because of the uncertainty about what to get. I wish
they'd just archive a CD image. Anyway, that's where I am. I'd be trying
RH except it doesn't seem to like the installation disk for some reason.
It works on other machines, but not this one. I think I wasn't meant to
have Linux at home.
Let me know if anything here looks familiar, or, I guess, I'll just
wade into it again and see if I can make it work this time since I finally
remembered that my block device is /dev/cdrom. :-/ Thanks again, John.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

First suggestion: snag Debian 2.1. It should be a lot easier to
install. I don't think CheapBytes and friends have it yet, but you
can order it from http://netgod.net/.

Secondly, you're going to have to give specifics. What packages,
exactly what error messages, and exactly what keys you're pressing.
Are you installing from the CD? Are you using apt? What are the
parameters set in the "Access" section in dselect? Things like this.
I can probably help you if I have that information, but otherwise,
with about 2000 packages, it's a bit like looking for a needle in a
haystack.

Also, FYI, it's not possible to install every single package on the
Debian CD. This is due to conflicts. For instance, Debian comes with
about a dozen different mail servers, but you can only have one on
your system at any one time. That sort of thing. So I do not
recommend picking that option unless you have... a) LOTS of disk space
to burn, and b) lots of time to spend figuring out dependencies :-)
