Generally speaking you can think of an octet as a byte. An octet is an
8 bit value. Now days, in most cases, a byte is considered to be 8
bits as well. But on some systems that is not necessarily the
case. Therefore, to unambiguously mean 8 bits, the term octet is
preferred.
