Hehe. Really, try this. What tool were you using to benchmark? You ought
to try this:
hdparm -T -t /dev/hda
The second value ("buffered disk reads") is the one that matters.
Also see the manpage for hdparm, specifically options for -d and -u. You
can perhaps turn on DMA or unmask-interrupt flags for the drive.
