Hi,

I'm the guy with the Pentium 133 that has been plodding along with
rebuilding the computer one piece at a time and installing Linux. Since
my last message, I have also, now replaced the video card. The only
thing left from the original computer is the CPU, Memory and 3.5" drive.

I have Red Hat Linux 5.2 installed and should have Samba starting up
when the machine boots. I want to put this computer on my small Lan as
a server. It's plugged into my network, but of course none of the
computers are talking to each other yet.

* When I start the computer, it runs through its initialization just
fine until it gets to where it is starting networking. Then it starts
looking for various commands, mostly in /etc/rc.d/rc3/d and returns
the answer "J: Command not found". It all runs by so quickly I can't
really pinpoint which specific files or commands it's not finding.
        - Is there a "debug" sort of thing that will let me walk
through the initialization slowly so I can see what is working and make
a note before it moves on?
        - It appears like I'm not getting Samba to run at all since
I get all these command not found messages. Is that right? What can I
do about it. I have edited the smb.conf file, but only to personalize
some of the settings, and I followed the HowTo's, etc. It has been
returning these errors since I installed it with Samba.

* I am trying to connect with several Windoze 95 machines that are
networked with Artisoft's Lantastic Netbios. Any thoughts on this? From
what I have read, it seems I should be able to connect them the way I
want and it should work with Samba.

* When I run Ping from Windows, it defaults to my modem and doesn't
seem to try and send it out over the network. What is the proper way to
ping over a network from a Windows 95 computer?

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

Carl
