OK, a few points.

First, edit the top-level Makefile and make sure the line that reads
SMP=1 is uncommented.  Then make dep && make clean and build like usual.

Secondly, kernel 2.1.x is *much* faster for SMP than 2.0.x.  You may
want to investigate this route, or wait for 2.2.  But in any case, you 
will certainly want to upgrade to 2.2 when it arrives.
