First of all, you say "my card is *supposed* to be both SBPro and Ensoniq SS
compat." "Compatable" is usually a type of software emulation in the
Windows drivers. SB compatable in windows is not SB compatable in Linux.
Ensoniq has another nice little twist with their products. I used to have
an Ensoniq Soundscape VIVO 90. Sounds like I should be able to compile my
kernel to support the Ensoniq Soundscape doesn't it? NO F**King way! The
VIVO 90 is different from the normal one. Just like I'm sure that your PCI
card is different from the standard Ensoniq SoundScape. I just looked at
the Hardware Compatability list. There is no mention of a PCI card. I
seriously doubt that it is supported.

However, another issue is that you can't compile. I would suggest following
these instructions if you are using Debian 2.0:

        http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/debian-faq-11.html#ss11.1

I like the make xconfig. I'm not sure how you're going about the build, but
I like the make-kpkg utility better than the old method of building.

BTW: I built a kernel probably 50 times trying to get that damn soundcard
working before I just gave up ( that was in 1995 with Slackware). If you
absolutely need sound (like me), go to microtech and pick up a SB 16 Vibra
for $30. It is OEM, so you don't get a box, but it will get rid of all
your headaches and your sound will be great.
