I too find it hilarious that 'small potato' broadcasters will put
mission critical applications on a 'doze platform and then suffer
failures because the 'robust' operating system is not up to the task.
If you are going to use poorly written software, then at least MONITOR
it equipment for problems!
BTW: This is not, IMHO Gates-bashing.
(No blood, no ball bat, no sniveling little rich weasel)
<shameless I/T related rant>
What many newby computer users (Note: this applies to ALL types of
computer users - not just those on PC's) do not realize is that change
in inevitable. The sooner the 'doze lovers get over the fact that very
little good will ever come from Redmond in the near future, the sooner
they can start learning how to work with the next thing coming. This is
doubly true for I/T majors.
If they start now, they might not be totally left behind. The
alternative is hang around and whine because the rest of the world has
realized what they are too blind to see.
It is a pain keeping up, but that just goes with the territory in this
business. I had learned 3 or 4 different operating systems before the
first PC was even built. There were a lot of us writing programs before
Billy ever invaded his old man's garage. Many of us are still working in
various parts of the industry.
Granted, I am as old or older than some of the Prof's out there, but by
keeping up, I get to see all the newest goodies. When my friends
finally make the switch, I am usually able to help them. Oh, and let's
not forget, keeping up on the newest stuff has kept me FULLY EMPLOYED
for the last 24 years!!!

Ask anyone in aviation. It is your attitude that determines your
altitude. Don't whine because you invested time in a yesterday's
technology. Take what you learned and apply it, and then go learn
something new.
