The whistling followed by the sudden large number of bad blocks probably
means a head crash.
I would warrant the drive just for peace of mind.

If it is a head crash and is recoverable at this time it does not mean
you will not continue to have problems.  The inconvenience of installing
the new drive may be tiny compared to losing everything on the drive
later if it gets worse.
