When you ran the fdisk, or the cfdisk, did you specify to look at
/dev/hdb? I don't use cfdisk usually, rather fdisk, and you must do:
fdisk /dev/hdb.

I have been running Slackware for years and never once had the
problems that you are describing. Slackware works fine with multiple
partitions. I think the only time I had an installation crap out on me
was when I didn't make a partition big enough and I filled it up
before it was done. If you would like to log a step by step procedure
of what you are doing and what the symptoms are, perhaps I could
identify where the problem is.
