Since you are dual booting, have you considered using loadlin?  It's very handy
and can accomplish some things that normal boot loaders can't.  Loadlin is a dos
application that kicks dos out of memory and proceeds to load linux.  You will
have to copy the kernel to the dos partition, and pass it parameters such as:
loadlin c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb2 ro. With it, you can boot from any partition
on any drive! On my dual boot system, I have a windows shortcut defined that is
marked "run in MS DOS mode". When I click on it, it unloads Windows, run loadlin
and boots into linux. Very slick!

Try it, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
