my apologies.
It was not that long ago that i started to play with networking.
The best thing you can do is to print out or purchase a copy of the
"network administrators guide". It's free to download but worth it to buy the
hard copy also.
I've always been horrible at giving directions, but i will offer one last bit
of advice. try to find a network card that is supported by default on your
distribution. I've had good luck with smc ultra's on redhat and mandrake's.
everyone has a favorite. but the place to start is making sure you start with
working hardware.
then read the NAG.
