I can't tell about packages, but if you get the tar.bz2 file and compile and
install it yourself (you will need some other Debain packages as
prerequisites), then it goes into the local branch and does not interfer badly.
Also you can remove it easily from there.

I think you need Debian Sarge for compilation; it is pretty straightforward.
