Another option is to use the 'write' server command

> write .civserverrc

which saves many settings, but not everything.

You can also store settings in another file, for example,

  myspecialsettings

and use

  civclient -r myspecialsettings

to load them, or

> read myspecialsettings

to read them from the server prompt.
I've used this a lot to test the AI.
