The SDL client currently looks for "fonts/Vera.ttf" in the data
directory and if it's not found it falls back to "stdfont.ttf" in the
data directory which can be a copy of or link to another unicode font.
I wasn't aware of the problem with Vera.ttf, so it should probably be
the other way around: first look for stdfont.ttf and if it's not found
fall back to the Freeciv font (this would be the quick fix, feel free
to post other ideas :-))
