Alas, it appears Knoppix lacks development support for gtk / gtk-2.0. 
So much for that route.  Sigh.  Back to trying to fix the windows build
environment (if I get that right, I'll document what I did to get it
right - as far as I can tell, I'm missing some set of mingw specific
development headers & libs [specifically, configure complains about
argz.h and fails on iconv]).

If I don't make headway by late today, I'll just post the patch as is in
the hopes that someone else can validate when the server invoked by the
client.
