The menu Item is there, it just doesn't do a thing. Save does. It saves it as 
civgame[year]m.sav. If it is an auto save, it leaves off the m at the end. (I 
assume it stands for manual)

Hmm, when you say it would not do a savegame, do you mean that the menu
item was disabled, or that using it seemed to have no effect?

On win32 at least, there is a lack of feedback when you save, the most
you'll get is "yourname: 'save '" or "yourname: 'save somefilename'" in
the message dialog.  This should probably be fixed.

Also, depending on server settings, the server may append a .sav or a
.sav.gz suffix to the filename you choose.
