I run gtk2 client:

        [perrin@m195h freeciv]$ client/civclient &
        Encodings: Data=UTF-8, Local=UTF-8, Internal=UTF-8

1: Invalid string conversion from UTF-8 to UTF-8.

        (civclient:14496): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtktextbuffer.c: line 543
        (gtk_text_buffer_emit_insert): assertion `g_utf8_validate (text, len,
        NULL)' failed

This last error message I see all the time.

I try to start the game with a viking leader with non-ASCII characters,
and I am not allowed. The name is not valid.

I try to name my city the same as a name that exists in the ruleset. I am
not allowed. I toggle off the option to name my own cities and let the
server decide. Now occasionally I will not be allowed to found my cities.

I try to run an autogame, and immediately get the

        [perrin@m195h freeciv]$ server/civserver --read test.serv
        Encodings: Data=UTF-8, Local=ISO-8859-1, Internal=ISO-8859-1

        1: a: Failed to build city at (22, 8)
        1: a's Settlers[101] (22,8)->(-1,-1){0,0} could not make city on
        Grassland

errors.

My $LANG is set to no_NO.UTF-8, but none of my problems go away with
'unset LANG'. Nor if I do 'make install'.

This is bad. cvs is pretty much broken.
