Indeed.  I guess it is a bug in automake.  We should note this in BUGS 
(automake 1.5 isn't supported, or something like that).  Not that it should 
matter since distributed tarballs have automake already run.  Maybe a comment 
in client/Makefile.am would be sufficient.
