I tried to install gtk 2.4 and ran through the dependencies cascade.
Eventually I was stopped by

chris@karl:~/tmp/fontconfig-2.2.2$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local
...
fcfreetype.c: In function cFreeTypeQuery':
fcfreetype.c:280: S_FontInfoRec' undeclared (first use in this function)
fcfreetype.c:280: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
fcfreetype.c:280: for each function it appears in.)
fcfreetype.c:280: parse error before sfontinfo'
fcfreetype.c:739: sfontinfo' undeclared (first use in this function)
make[2]: *** [fcfreetype.lo] Fehler 1
make[2]: Leaving directory /home/chris/tmp/fontconfig-2.2.2/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Fehler 1
make[1]: Leaving directory /home/chris/tmp/fontconfig-2.2.2'
make: *** [all] Fehler 2

I don't want a 'testing' system, I'm still a Debian newbie.

So I'll trash this for now. Going to maintain GTK 1.2 for some time?
