Me too... but... In Colonization you had to transport your workers around 
the globe to other cities. Time consuming and boring when you have tens of 
cities. Freeciv cities are also bigger thus allowing more workers -> more 
micromanagement.

IMO city improvements are way to go.

Some Colonization features are still worth of considering, I think. For 
example in Colonization you had rebel/tory advantage during independence 
war. Similar advantage through nationalities could be nice.
