Looks like a case of incompatible client and server that should be caught
with an error message (capability), but isn't.

Please tell us

  - which server version you are trying to connect to
    (if on pubserver, which port number)
  - which client version (if CVS, which date)
  - which client GUI (e.g. Xaw, GTK, GTK 2, ...)
  - which platform you're on (eg. "Linux Redhat 9.0", "Windows 2000 SP1")
  - if you are using a nondefault tileset or ruleset, which one
