You don't mention that Freeciv was designed to support move ahead.  At 
times I have moved 20 units or more while waiting for a server 
response.  SO the client must be at least fast enough to perform screen 
updates in such cases.  This probably doesn't mean all that much in 
practice unless you have a very slow system.
