Andi Payn's code for adding generalised calendars to Freeciv has
been adopted by FreecivAC, and used to make FreecivAC behave sensibly as
far as dates are concerned (it seems a little odd to be terraforming
Alpha Centauri in 4000BC). An updated patch lives at
http://freecivac.sf.net/; patches available there should apply to fairly
recent Freeciv CVS; the most recent is currently calendar-20020728.patch,
i.e. against CVS on July 28th.

Improvements from previous versions:
- Capability strings are now used to ensure compatibility
- Fallback to default Freeciv calendar on both client and server side if
the relevant capability is not present
- The start year is now set based on the first calendar, so the game no
longer has to start in 4000BC

The patch is fairly clean and straightforward (IMHO) and adds
functionality necessary for SMAC mode.

        Ben
