I got a new version, and then I was able to build from CVS.  I didn't
apply the other patch, as for the moment no one else needs to be able to
build the tarball my `make dist` produces ;)

The 12 April snapshot still included 'configure' -- that made it much
easier on the 2.52 user ;)  I had therefore assumed (without paying
close enough attention) that the snapshots were really the product of
`make dist` and not literally a 'snapshot'.
