Jason, Gaute, Ross can we finish this direction system issue?! 

Jason, Ross: can you post an updated version of dir_ok and
straightest_direction (with DIR_CW and DIR_CCW)? 

Gaute: can you post a MAPSTEP patch?

What other places are in the code which hold magic numbers? What other
places in the code isn't ready to switch to another direction ordering?
