This one from the 1.2.5 changelog sounds about right:

        * gtk/gtkwindow.c (gtk_window_realize): if the widget hasn't been
        allocated yet (happens if the user realizes the window prematurely),
        size request and allocate it.

Also, testing reveils that 1.2.5 works while 1.2.4 doesn't.
