There is in fact a SMAC "fork" being worked upon, by myself and
Stewart Adcock. It's not really a fork as such, in that we're working
mainly on ruleset generalisations to allow SMAC-like behaviour, and fully
intend to submit all of the necessary patches back to freeciv as and when
they work properly! The only reason it's being worked upon seperately at
present is because the changes we're making are pretty major, and it'll be
a while before they result in a "stable" version of freeciv.

SMAC-style borders more or less work now. This is probably the
first thing we'll be able to release as a patch to freeciv, after the new
release and accompanying feature freeze. I suspect that the use of borders
would simplify the diplomacy and "watchtower" codes...

There is a webpage for "freeciv-AC" at
http://bellatrix.pcl.ox.ac.uk/~stewart/fcindex.html, which details the
procedure for obtaining a CVS snapshot (there is also a "stable
version" there, but that's very old). Additional developers are
welcomed! There would be a link on the freeciv "Projects and Ports" page,
but our emails to the maintainer have gone unanswered. ;(

We're working at present mainly on government, unit and tech
rulesets, but we've done some work on buildings. We're intending to do
some work on terrain at some point, but this looks too daunting at the
moment!
