The attempts are much appreciated, but I still haven't been able to get
./configure to run. This time I just made up a dozen or two of command
lines without much deeper understanding of what's going on, (I have
tried to understand from the info pages but it will take more study.)
Either the X libraries or the Xpm library cannot be found. And they
always fail on symbols in libraries that are found without a problem
elsewhere in the same configure run.
Our Xpm library is on /usr/local/{include,X11} while X11 is in /usr/openwin.
This was mentioned earlier as a possible problem. The two are from
different sources and there are good reasons to separate them.
I don't understand how it can be so hard to do something so simple,
but apparently it is.
It would also help if somebody could mention a command line that
*ought* to work, something that is an 'accepted' way to specify the
Xpm library location. I've tried using -x-libraries and --x-includes,
$CFLAGS/$LDFLAGS, and $X_EXTRA_LIBS, with -L and -l flags in many
combinations. There doesn't seem to be a 'natural' way, and none of
them works anyway.
