A $35 spool is usually solid-core (used for permanent wiring).  Most 100ft
or smaller patch cables are stranded.  Maybe you can get 1000-foot spools
of stranded TP cable for a similar price, too, but the ones I've seen
locally that cheap were all solid-core.
Also, you have to remember that time is money, and the time spent turning
$35 of cable into 100-foot patch cables is worth something, too.
