Most of the $500 is being put up by our group leader, Joe Eck 
(see http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_17371.html)

He told us that he thought the SETI@home folks' original prize for the 
500M unit (a free T-shirt) "just wouldn't cut it".

Anyway, a very generous prize.  WSU is now well among the top 200 
universities worldwide contributing to the SETI@home project.
