KDE 2.2
By Eric Foster-Johnson
The K Desktop Environment (KDE), which constitutes one-of the two-major
Linux desktop environments, released their latest version, KDE 2.2. The
release includes over 100 productivity applications and raises the bar
of Linux desktop software.
One of KDE 2.2's main features is an enhanced version of the Konqueror
Web and file browser. Konqueror combines the traditional Web browsing
functionality with file browsing. But, you can do more than just browse
files on disk. Konqueror supports a number of network protocols to
present files as if they were located on your hard disk. Konqueror
supports the Network File System (NFS), SMB Windows shares, the File
Transfer Protocol (FTP), HTTP Web servers, LDAP servers, digital
cameras, and audio CDs.
In addition to its file-browsing capabilities, Konqueror also supports
a larger set of Web standards and pseudo-standards including media
formats such as Flash, RealAudio, RealVideo, and Shockwave. The
Shockwave plug-in is actually the ActiveX plug-in for Windows.
Konqueror supports a few such ActiveX plug-ins, making it easier to
browse the Web from a non-Windows box.
Download the KDE 2.2 sources from http://www.kde.org, or you can
download pre-built binary versions for major Linux distributions. See
http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-2.2.html for links to
download the binary versions. These include special versions for
Caldera, Connectiva, Debian, Linux-Mandrake, Red Hat, and SuSE Linux,
as well as FreeBSD, IBM AIX, and Compaq Tru64 UNIX.
