To be honest, I would discourage any start ups from using their own servers
any more, even if they can afford broad band access.

There are web hosting services with good options AND good prices. I know a
few people (myself included) who are happy with www.successfulhosting.com.
(1/2 GB for $20/mo, PHP, perl, c/c++, chilisoft ASP coming soon, mysql, ssl,
etc) They do all the technical set up for you. All you need to do is come
up with good business plan, have a good web site, and you are ready to go.

Besides, when you outsource things like that, they would usually have
guarantees like "99.999% up time or else" type. At least for me, it's hard
to keep server up absolutely all the time. Yes, Linux is pretty darn
stable. But IF anything goes wrong AND I'm out for shopping or business
trip or just meeting the client at the very same time, it's hard/impossible
to get things straight off site.

Oh, and one more thing... from my personal experience...
Marketing speaks above good idea. There's a very rare exception like
hotornot.com, but for the most cases, you really need to have a very solid
business idea laid out before you roll out your plan.

Hi,
My friend and I are thinking about starting an online business and
we're not sure where to buy a server or what kind of business to start. I
think National Computer or CompUSA is a good place to buy a server. I
think Linux is the cheapest OS to use. I think we'll go with broadband
(proablely Road Runner).
