Two commands (after editing /etc/sources.list to point to new stable dist:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

I was totally blown away by the painless upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 (Slink
to Potato). In fact on the other machines I had several programs
custom built against the libs in 2.1, after the upgrade I expected to
have to rebuild them. Nope, things kept righ on percolating along.
With Debian security updates are easily applied and it seems fewer
security issues arise than with other distributions. For a production
system, there is no better than Debian GNU/Linux.

Perhaps you could persuade your people to at least do a side-by-side
comparison for at least six months. Of course business these days
can't see past the next 30 days...
