If I might add a slight bit more detail:

The 3.3.6 version requires an agpgart.o module that is not part of the
kernel.  Unfortunatel I'm not typing this from a live Internet
connection so I can't look up the URL for you.

The 2.2.18pre series contain an updated agpgart.o module with support
for more hardware as well as direct rendering support.  X 4.0.1 will
work only with this module.  It will not work with the module that
3.3.6 uses, and 3.3.6 will not work with this one.
