i'm a newbie, an old newbie.
i like goofing around with computers.
it's only a hobby -- that's what i keep
telling myself.

aclug helped me set up my first linux system,
at a saturday install party. it's running
mandrake 6.1 on 100MgHz cpu with a gig drive
and a 540Mg drive. dale took and posted some pictures
so it's been since then . . . .
so, yes, i'm still very much a newbie.

i'm experimenting with dellgxm166 now.
i've run suse6.3 on it and experienced some
write to floppy diskette problems. the floppy
always mounts read only. the diskette works just
fine on the mandrake6.1.

so i scrapped suse, and tried to install mandrake7.0.
but i could not get it installed on the dell.

i was able to install storm linux 2000 on the dell,
and i'm experiencing the same problem. the diskette
always mounts read-only.

here's what fstab looked like on each distro:

mandrake6.1
device mount point filesystem options
dump fsk
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto sync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide
0 0

suse6.3
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user
0 0

storm2k
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto defaults,noauto,user,exec,rw
0 0

the suse set permissions for fd0 as 666 -- i could see this happening
thru doing install after install after install. permissions for the
user were set to 666 as well.

i'm missing something. i've been stumbling around in the FM and
tweaking fstab and such on suse and storm for a couple of weeks now
and i've become an irritant to even myself. i'd much rather be futzing
around with perl, and i'm clueless there too, rather than trying
to write to a diskette without any success.

can someone offer me a clue?
