i haven't seen mandrake 7 but did notice on their page
they have some patches cause they didn't fully test
some configurations.
one of the patches is for autoboot users --
the problem is described as
what: can't load second stage ramdis, or can't exec stage2
when: before starting the x graphical install, after finding cdrom
why : the autoboot.bat script is buggy
solution: use the autoboot.bat patch
the patch looks like:
mdkinst\loadlin mdkinst\vmlinuz ramdisk_size=32000
initrd=mdkinst\initrd.cd mdkinst cdrom
and they give some instructs on how to apply the batch at boot
