Well... not really. You can enable "console on serial port" in the
kernel... but that's not really what you're looking for I don't think, and
is probably more difficult to configure than mgetty. :-)
What specific problems are you having at this point?

Floppy disk tip #4: Never insert a diskette into the drive upside down. The
data can fall off the surface of the disk and jam the intricate mechanics of
the drive.
