Okay, I tried that.  The mode was already set to 0660, which should be
sufficient, but I tried changing it nonetheless, as per your suggestion.  cu
was not installed (I'd never heard of that program... heh...) so I tried
minicom.  Same results as before.  *sigh*

I guess I'll keep swapping hardware components.
