If you're getting 44k-48k, I'd be very pleased.  Considering that the
difference between 52k and 48k is only 4k--that's the speed of a 4800baud
modem.  The difference is very minimal and hardly worth the effort to think
about, IMO.  :-)

When customers complain that they're only connecting at 31200 with their
33600 modem, I like to tell them to try connecting at 2400 (the difference)
to see what they're actually missing.  They'll usually stop complaining
then. :-)
