Several people at the install were needing newer packages then those that
were on the Debian CD's we installed from.

Here is how I have done it:

First you need to have your net connection set-up,

If you have a modem and an isp (besides AOL or NetZero) you can use
pppconfig (as root)

you will need to know your username, password, authentication method
(probably PAP if you don't know), isp phone number, and isp name servers,
and the com port of your (non win) modem

fill in the appropriate information as pppconfig asks.

connect to your isp by typing (as root)
pon <name you gave in config>

after a bit your connected to the net and ready to go

next start dselect as root

select : 0. [A]ccess Choose the access method to use.
and hit enter,
select apt and enter
when it asks if you want to change your source list, select y enter and
enter the following:

deb http://www.debian.org/~joeyh/ stable-update/
deb http://netgod.net x/
deb http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/hci/GNOME/gnome-1.0/debian slink main
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable updates
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable non-US
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

then select * 1. [U]pdate Update list of available packages, if possible.

and enter

after thats done go to select and select the new packages you want (all
updated installed packages will already be selected for update, you all
need to look for new packages)

to add a package type +,
to remove a package type _
to search for a name hit / and enter the text you want to search for \ to
search further with the same string
when a conflict appears just hit enter, unless you know what your doing
(if a confilct wan't go away after several times) hit Q

when done selecting new packages hit enter,
then go through the standard Install (which will probablt take a while,
it will tell you how many megs your d/l), Config, Remove,Quit

If it errors during the install because of a connection error, install
again, and it will continue where it left off in the d/l

If you have any questions comments, let me know
