The distributions all use the same kernel, so there is no difference.
To answer your other question, Linux will load-balance between processors.
On my dual P133, for instance, it's as though each program were running on
a standard P133 system. Although you can run twice as many programs at
that speed.
Make sense?
As for drawbacks with Linux... I don't know enough about SMP to compare it
with other OSes. I do know that the 2.2.x kernels have "much improved"
SMP support over the 2.0.x kernels--so regardless of which distro you use,
you'll want to download and compile a 2.2.x kernel, I'm sure.
