[ wanting to add a SCSI card & drive to an IDE system with minimal
pain and time ]

Compile a new kernel with everything you currently need plus support
for the adaptec card (either compiled in or as a module). If you're
going to ever boot off the SCSI drive, compile it in.

Power down the computer, put the card & drive in.

Boot the new kernel.

When you want to boot off the new drive, put a kernel there and tell
LILO about it :)

"You're dead", he said. Keli waited. She couldn't think of any suitable
reply. "I'm not" lacked a certain style, while "Is it serious?" seemed
somehow too frivolous. -- Princess Keli in trouble (Terry Pratchett, Mort)
