I'd suggest private static IP addresses (10.0, 192.168, etc). Re:
network cable, thinnet will give you a bus topology, with no need for
a hub. RJ will give you a star topology with a hub needed. You may
also have a dependency on what kind of network cards you end up with
(if you don't have a choice in the matter).
