This works well though the 'f' parameter must immediately preceed
the filename. You can also tar -tzf [filename] to test the archive. I
pipe it through less to see what's in an archive and to see where it
intends to place the files: tar -tzf foo.tar.gz | less. The 'v'
parameter displays the file names on the screen as it works its way
through the archive. This works with files ending in .tar.gz, .tgz,
.tar.Z.
