Sounds more like that diamond card has a hardware cursor, and the Xserver is 
freakin' because of it. Unfortunately, don't know where to tell you to look in 
xconfig, but just having this little factoid may help. Good Luck!!

I remember some interactions with gpm & X ... try killing gpm before
starting X. I'm not sure what triggers the interaction; I'm able to
continuously run gpm while using X.

If that's not it, or you're not running gpm, double-check that the Mouse
section in your XF86Config is correct.
