kewl...  um, first, remove the alsa stuff from debian...  : ^ )  the latest 
version is better...  second, re-compile the kernel w/ _only_ the first sound 
thing
mentioned compiled...  leave out all the modules and everything...  then, go to 
the alsa page and download all the 0.3.0pre4 stuff and the alsaconf 0.3x
version...  compile drivers, then lib, then utils...  then run the alsaconf 
script...  you can use the alsasound script (found in the ./utils dir in the
drivers src tree) to start/stop the drivers...  i have this script copied into 
/etc/initd.rc directory, so it loads on boot...  um, try all this and let me
know what happens (btw, make sure there is a /lib/modules/<kernel ver>/misc 
dir, or it won't work correctly)

p.s.  i'm running slink, too, so that way, hopefully i can help you out a 
little more than if you were running redhat (tho' i've successfully had it on 
that,
too)
