Hello,
Recently there have been some questions on the list which have
received no answer. Generally, this means that nobody here knows the
answer. You're always encouraged to check here first, but if you
don't get an answer, here are other places to try. ACLUG-L is a
general-purpose list, and for some questions, you need a list with
people with specialization in the particular area of your question.
So, here are places to check:
* Usenet. Particularly the linux.* and comp.os.* hierarchies.
Also look at Usenet archives in Dejanews.
* Web pages:
+ www.aclug.org for general background
+ http://ww.complete.org/mailinglists/archives/ for searchable
archives of this mailing list
+ Your distribution's website, one of:
- www.debian.org
- www.redhat.com
- www.suse.de
- www.pht.com
- etc.
* XFree86: www.xfree86.org
* Web pages for your particular app in question;
you can find homepages by visiting www.linuxlinks.com or
www.freshmeat.net
* Other mailing lists specializing in certain issues
+ Most run Majordomo, which will understand some, but not all,
Listar commands like we use here.
+ Check the website for your program or question; usually they
will have pointers to mailing lists
+ Ask here if you are looking for a different mailing list; we may
at least know enough about your problem to refer you to the
people that can answer it
* Web search tools
+ I like hotbot, because you can type on words and it will give
you a list of matching pages that contain ALL of those words;
useful for narrowing things down; ie, "AGP Linux"
* Documentation that came with your program may list mailing lists
or author's e-mail. Use mailing lists first, and only write
directly to the author as a last resort. Look at manpages, info
files, and info in /usr/doc or in the distribution tar.gz.
Hope this helps!
