I just discovered something useful. Perhaps everyone else knew this all
along, but...

If I take a zip from a MS operating system (W9x, NT) and it has long
filenames (like the names of a bunch of new .deb files I downloaded from
debian.org...). I can see those long filenames just fine on the MS
machines, but when I mount the zip drive without any additional stuff
(letting it default to fs type, etc) on my Linux system these files all show
up as 8+3 format (ie xfree8~1.deb).

To see the filenames correctly, I have to force mount to use type vfat, so
my mount command looks like:

    mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /zip

This saves a lot of hassle, since before I would:

1) mount the zip disk on my w95 machine (which dual boots with slackware).
2) copy the files (long names) to a dos partition there.
3) reboot into linux (automounting the dos partition)
4) copy the files to an ext2 formatted zip disk
5) take ext2 zip disk to the other linux system and use it there...

Ack!

Greg
